Racing to Return to North WIlkesboro -- For Real
November 3rd, 2009 12:05 PM
05:34 am, November 02, 2009

A group of race-industry veterans has signed a 3-year lease of the North Wilkesboro Speedway with an exclusive option to buy the track. Principals in the deal tell the Winston-Salem Journal racing will return next October 3rd with the USARacing Pro Cup Championship Series. The USARacing's schedule for next season, with the date in North Wilkesboro, was announced in a drivers' meeting at the current season's last race Saturday night in South Boston, Va.

Speedway Associates' president, Alton McBride Jr. tells the paper they have been working quietly on the deal for three years. "We're in this for the right reasons," McBride said. "We're in this because our life is motorsports." Bruton Smith, the billionaire owner of North Wilkesboro Speedway, has said a number of times that he would take $12 million for the track, which closed in 1996.

The Journal reports the principals had not planned to make an announcement yet, but when the new USARacing schedule was released Saturday and included North Wilkesboro, word started spreading fast. McBride said they will announce more detailed plans within the next couple of weeks.

August 21st, 2009 6:10 PM

Among the many outdoor places that Wilkes County offers to enjoy and play, the Yadkin River Greenway is definitely one of my and my family's faves:

This Greenway is a natural area between urban communities where wildlife, vegetation, and streams are preserved and enjoyed. Greenways also provide transportation, recreation, and exercise opportunities for the community.

The document below is a copy of the article, please read it and enjoy, WE DO!!!!!!!!

Wilkes Community College - I'm a student there too..........
July 23rd, 2009 9:06 AM
Wilkes Community College officials are also touting their results. In a news release yesterday, the school reported it has been honored by the North Carolina Community College System with the distinction of being one of 11 colleges to meet the standards for “Exceptional Institutional Performance.” WCC and only one other community college have received this recognition for the past two consecutive years, and WCC remains the only institution to receive the recognition for the past four consecutive years.

“Achieving this distinction, and building on our history of being an exceptional institution, is a reflection of the dedication of our students, faculty, and staff,” said WCC President Dr. Gordon Burns. “This designation shows that our college is meeting its mission to provide quality education and workforce training for our community.”

The NC Community College System measures the 58 community colleges across the state in eight core areas each year. To meet the system’s “Exceptional Institutional Performance” colleges must meet or exceed all 8 system standards.

Can You Believe It? The Sound of Racing Returns to the Foothills
June 16th, 2009 5:35 PM
3:53 pm, June 16, 2009

That sound coming from North Wilkesboro Speedway today wasn't your ears fooling you. As we reported earlier today, instructional drivers from the Buck Baker Racing School were testing the track surface. They hope to expand here. Buck Baker Racing School owner Jeff Bowyer, says it looks good. The track surface isn't as bad as he's raced on before, he says, and the facility needs some paint, but the pavement seemed solid -- easing their biggest concern. Charles Collins, who is leasing the track from Bruton Smith, said he is hoping to get the cracks in the track patched and paint the walls. Collins also hopes he can hold a late model race at the historic track before the summer is over..

Homeowners Insurance Rates Down in Wilkes
May 1st, 2009 10:20 AM
05:58 am, May 01, 2009

Some good news today for those who pay homeowners insurance. Rates will be going down in Wilkes county. The latest changes to the state's homeowners insurance rates were settled Wednesday when a Wake County Superior Court judge dismissed an effort to stop a deal negotiated in December between insurance companies and state regulators from taking effect. The N.C. Rate Bureau, an independent group representing insurers writing policies in North Carolina, typically asks for rate increases each year, some substantially higher in areas prone to damage from natural disasters. The state's insurance commissioner seldom agrees to the bureau's request, but instead typically approves a lower increase or a decrease for each of the state's 18 territories as measured by risk. Homeowners in Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Davie, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Watauga and Wilkes counties will experience a 1.2 percent rate decrease rather than the requested 9.2 percent increase -- an average savings of $52 on a $150,000 house. "This is an issue that effects everybody in North Carolina, not just the folks who see an increase or see no change" in insurance premiums, said Kristin Milam, a spokeswoman for the insurance department.

First-Time Homebuyer Credit Questions and Answers: Homes Purchased in 2009
April 19th, 2009 12:08 PM

Q: When must I pay back the credit for the home I purchased in 2009?

A:  Generally, there is no requirement to pay back the credit for a principal residence purchased in 2009. The obligation to repay the credit on a home purchased in 2009 arises only if the home ceases to be your principal residence within 36 months from the date of purchase. The full amount of the credit received becomes due on the return for the year the home ceased being your principal residence.

Q. If I claim the first-time homebuyer credit for a purchase in 2009 and stop using the property as my principal residence before the 36 month period expires after I purchase, how is the credit repaid and how long would I have to repay it?

A. If, within 36 months of the date of purchase, the property is no longer used as your principal residence, you are required to repay the credit. Repayment of the full amount of the credit is due at that time the income tax return for the year the home ceased to be your principal residence is due. The full amount of the credit is reflected as additional tax on that year's tax return. Form 5405 and its instructions will be revised for tax year 2009 to include information about repayment of the credit.

Wilkes Home Sales Jump in March 2009
April 14th, 2009 7:12 PM
Wilkes Home Sales Jump in March
06:06 am, April 13, 2009

Here's the good news story we'd hoped to start the week with: home sales are up in Wilkes county. Not just a little, either, say local Realtors. According to monthly statistics compiled by the Wilkes Board of Realtors' Multiple Listing Service, the march home sales totaled $4.5 million. That's more than double February's sales and nearly 90 percent more than January. It was also a 21 percent increase over a year ago. The Journal-Patriot reports the average home sold for a bit over 150-thousand dollars in March.

"(Realtors in Wilkes) are a lot busier than we were. It seems to pick up every week," said Linda Zinger, president of the Wilkes Board of Realtors. Zinger said much of this increase is due to first-time home buyers taking advantage of a new federal tax credit. This economic stimulus measure lets first-time home buyers deduct $8,000, or 10 percent of a home's value from their federal income tax if they buy between Jan. 1 and Nov. 30 of this year. The credit is refundable, meaning tax filers see a refund of the full $8,000 even if their tax bill was less than that.

Realtors report that sales of part-time homes in mountainous areas of Wilkes are up, but not as much as full time residences elsewhere in the county. Inquiries from potential buyers about undeveloped mountain land in Wilkes have increased in recent months, but local Realtors said this hasn't yet translated to a corresponding increase in sales.
